I love sleep, but historically, I’ve kind of sucked at sleeping through the night and waking up rested.
This is an off and on issue I’ve had for years, and I mostly chalk it up to anxiety and the inability to get and stay comfortable. I had a really old, uncomfortable mattress for the longest time, which definitely contributed to a restless night of sleep. When Chris and I got a new mattress, I thought all my sleepless nights would be a thing of the past, but anxiety still had other plans for me.
To finally get some sleep, I’ve tried exercising more, which helped me sleep better for a little while before my tossing and turning started up again. I tried ZzzQuil, but that has diphenhydramine (the main ingredient in Benadryl) in it, and I‘m suuuuper sensitive to that drug, so even a half dose would knock me out for the night and leave me groggy and a little dizzy in the morning… nothing makes mornings harder than a ZzzQuil hangover. A dose of melatonin worked for a while, but over time I seemed to work up some kind of immunity to it. Plus it gave me the most wild dreams I’ve ever had in my life! I also tried night time teas, but that only made me wake up more… tiny bladder problems 🤷🏼♀️
After years of terrible sleep with stints of rest in between, I finally found some things that really help me fall asleep and stay asleep, waking up rested and ready for the day. And yes, sometimes those days still include naps. I love sleeping, remember? 😉
Out of all the things I’ve tried, these products are the the ones that have kept me the most comfortable and let me fall asleep quickly with far fewer incidences of waking up in the middle of the night (it still happens, but with way less frequency than it used to… if I can go from waking up around 3am every single night to waking up once or twice a week, that’s a huge win in my book!). I never wake up groggy or with a melatonin hangover, and if you’re a “bad sleeper” like I am, I’m so excited for you to try some things that have offered me a little rest.
In no particular order, here are the products helping me sleep better these days:
This lotion smells incredible! I know what you’re thinking: $40 fora tube of lotion?!? Okay, but hear me out. I’ve had this single bottle since the fall and still have about 1/4 of the tube left. A little definitely goes a long way. I squeeze just a dollop into my palm and rub it into my hands before going to bed each night. It’s loaded with moisturizing shea butter, vetivert essential oil (used for insomnia and relaxation), lavender essential oil (used for relaxation and anxiety relief), and chamomile essential oil (promotes restful sleep and reduces anxiety). This magical blend is so soothing and helps me drift off into a peaceful slumber.
If the lotion is a little out of your price range or not really your thing, I recommend giving this spray a try. This spray is suitable for children and adults and it’s packed with the same great fragrances that the lotion is. Just a few sprays on the pillow and sheets before bed will help you fall asleep and stay asleep. The brand says that this formula is proven to help people fall asleep faster and wake up more refreshed.
Okay. I know it’s probably strange to put a lip mask on my list of things that help me sleep better, but if you knew me and how deeply my lip balm addiction goes, this would make perfect sense. I always have to have some kind of lip balm on, and that doesn’t stop just because I’m sleeping. I used to wake up, feel my dry lips, and reach for my nightstand lip balm. Since I started slathering a little bit of this lip mask each night before bed, my lips are protected and moisturized all night long.
This is probably the easiest, and definitely the tastiest, of my favorite options to help me sleep. Olly Sleep Gummies do contain some melatonin, but the formula they use doesn’t make me feel groggy in the morning. These things are so tasty too! It makes me a little sad that the dose is only 2 gummies😂 They’re available on the Olly website, Target, Amazon, and dozens of other retailers.
If you read my Living With Chronic Back Pain post, then you probably already know how much I love this pillow. I originally bought it when I was dealing with severe neck pain (a pinched nerve or slipped disc were the guesses), and it did wonders to ease my pain. Since sleeping on a memory foam pillow, I don’t know if I can ever go back to sleeping on a feather pillow. This one helps me get super comfy whether I sleep on my neck or side, and I can’t believe what a good deal it was!
Our room gets pretty warm, and after doing some reading, I learned that satin helps keep you cooler as you sleep. It also helps keep hair healthy and skin smooth. I picked this set of two satin pillowcases up for only $10, and it has made sleeping during these hot summer months much more bearable. No more waking up sweating with my hair stuck to my face 😂
I’ve always been really skeptical of CBD products, even after they became legal. There’s a stigma attached to CBD, which it turns out is actually really unfortunate because this stuff really works. This hemp-sourced CBD helps relieve anxiety and pain. There’s no THC or high with this product. The CBD and turmeric help to ease physical pain and calm the mind, making it easier to drift off to sleep and get a restful slumber.
I hope that if you’ve been struggling to sleep due to anxiety, an inability to get comfortable, pain, or general insomnia, some of these remedies might help. If they do, please let me know in the comments!
